Key Stage 3 - Key Concepts


- Using a range of Computing tools in a purposeful way to tackle questions, solve problems and create ideas and solutions of value - Exploring and using new Computing tools as they become available.
- Applying Computing learning in a range of contexts and in other areas of learning, work and life.

Communication and collaboration

- Exploring the ways that Computing can be used to communicate, collaborate and share ideas on a global scale, allowing people to work together in new ways and changing the way in which knowledge is created.

Exploring ideas and manipulating information

- Solving problems creatively by using Computing to explore ideas and try alternatives.
- Using Computing to model different scenarios, allowing people to identify patterns and test hypotheses.
- Manipulating information and processing large quantities of data efficiently.

Impact of technology

- Exploring how Computing changes the way we live our lives and has significant social, ethical and cultural implications.
- Recognising issues of risk, safety and responsibility surrounding the use of Computing.

Critical evaluation

- Recognising that information must not be taken at face value, but must be analysed and evaluated to take account of its purpose, author, currency and context.
- Reviewing and reflecting critically on what they and others produce using Computing.

KS4 – Computing Award and GCSE courses

All students follow a Computing course which commences in the final term in Year 9 and finishes in Year 10. The course is accredited with an Entry Level award in Computing.

There are two courses offered as an option, but this will change in 2017.

This course offers a broad introduction to ICT at exam level. It covers two units:
1. Using Digital Tools - 60% Controlled Assessment - A practical use of digital applications which is assessed internally
2. Living in a Digital World - 40% externally assessed with a terminal exam in Year 11

GCSE Computer Science - OCR
1. Computer Systems and programmes - externally assessed
2. Practical Investigation - controlled assessment - internally assessed
3. Programming Project - Students create solutions to computing tasks chosen from a set of options (controlled assessment)
