Disability Equality Scheme

The purpose of the Disability Equality Scheme helps schools to meet the General Duty.

The Disability and Discrimination Act (1995) defines a disabled person as someone with a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

Schools have a duty to promote disability equality having due regard to the following:
- Promotion of positive attitudes towards disabled persons
- Encouraging participation by disabled people in public life
- Promotion of equality of opportunity
- Elimination of disability related harassments
- Elimination of unlawful discrimination
- Use of positive action/discrimination if necessary
